Individualised living conversations bring together people with disability, their families, allies and professionals with knowledge and experience in individualised living to discuss how we can create opportunities for people with disability to live in a home of their own, with the support they need to thrive. Our panellists come from around Australia sharing their ideas, experiences and insights.
This session will focus on housing and more. While unfortunately we cannot solve the housing crisis, we can however explore innovative ways to find suitable housing and to create a home that truly reflects the person. Home is more than just a roof over our heads – it is a place of freedom, privacy, responsibility, and belonging. We will explore this and more with our panel. You don't need to have attended Session 1 to join this session.
When: 6pm (Sydney time), Thursday 9 October
Mitchell Jones – Co-founder, Includa
"I think it's vital that people with disability have a home that is theirs, that they control and particularly one that is not owned or controlled by a Provider. Participant-led housing levels common and long-held power imbalances and creates a foundational dynamic that allows for more power to people with disability. If you control your home, you control what happens within it."
James T Burch - family member
"It’s important and essential that our son has his own home because it gives him independence, dignity and pride. Like anyone else, he deserves a place where he feels safe, happy, and in control of his own life. Having his own space means he isn’t just being cared for, he is truly living his life, his way and that is exactly what we wanted and have for him."
Bianca Gill - Home and Living consultant, Hire up
'It’s important for a person with disability to live in a home of their own with choice and control because it opens up so many possibilities for a person to achieve independence in other domains of their life, such as economic and social participation and expanding their informal networks.'
Kaitlyn King - Home and Living Services Manager, Housing Hub
"Having choice and control over homelife empowers people to live in a way that reflects who they are and what’s important to them. Being able to choose how you live is an integral part of leading a fulfilling life, which is different for everyone."

In this session we will explore the challenges that can get us waylaid and how to navigate them. We’ll look at concerns around risk and how a person-centred approach to safeguards and planning can support someone to grow and thrive in their own home. A housing journey story will be shared to illustrate what’s possible, alongside practical ways to think through risks while keeping the vision for a good life at the centre.
